I failed – miserably. Facebook’s hold over me was far too strong!

REVEALED. How I increased the value of my expert brand by over 700% – and how YOU can too.

OK, I admit it…

Last year, I listened to all those business gurus who said, “Don’t waste your time on Facebook.” I felt guilty for being a fan and I beat myself up for not being a “serious” business owner.

I decided to change my ways and I tried to not post so much.

I also stopped reading the threads in my favourite groups, and I tried even harder to not watch videos of dancing cats. Seriously, it was really tough to stay away so I even experimented with that app – Self Control.

But do you know what?

Despite my very best efforts I failed – miserably. Facebook’s hold over me was far too strong!

But more than that, I actually felt sad. You see, I like Facebook – A LOT. So much so that it’s often the first thing I check in the morning and the last thing I read at night. OK, so you could say I’m a little bit addicted, but I really like to catch up on all the social gossip and see the latest trends (does that make me a bad person?)

Anyway, with Facebook “forbidden” I felt sad – even disconnected.

And because “having fun” is such a fundamental aspect of my brand, I knew I couldn’t go on this way. It was time to bin that stupid Self Control app and screw the unhelpful advice.

If I couldn’t live without Facebook, I had to find a way to make Facebook work for me.

And that’s exactly what I did…

Sure, over the last year I’ve definitely wasted some “productive time” watching cats, taking quizzes, and looking at cute furry animals. But I’m OK with that.

You see, because I’ve also used Facebook in a strategic way to build my brand – BIG time.

In fact, last weekend I calculated that the value of my brand has grown by over 700% in the last year – just from being on Facebook.

Seriously. 700%!

Now, I mentioned this success in my Expert Brand Secrets Facebook group (click here to join us) – and since then people have been asking me how I’ve achieved this massive growth.

So I’ve decided to let you in on THREE of my best-kept Facebook brand building secrets.

Maybe you could use them to build your own expert brand too? Or even better, when you see how fab Facebook is for building an expert brand, you can stop being guilty for being an addict. You have the brand master’s permission!

1.     Uncover your CORE to establish your brand values

First up, if you’re wondering what the heck I mean by CTFO, it’s my signature, four-step system for creating your profitable, personable brand.

Core | Tribe | Feel it | Own it are the core steps I work through with all my 121 brand clients. They are also the key to building a brand, which positions you as the true expert you are. The good news is with this four-step system, you’ll know exactly how you need to work your brand to get seen on Facebook and attract the right customers to your digital door.

Facebook is a visual place (it’s one of the reasons design matters so much here). You have just three seconds to get your message across and keep your potential customers interested.

And what do they see first?

It’s the way you look! Yup looks matter. They matter a heck of a lot in this digital world.

This means if you’re serious about building your Expert Brand, you need people to perceive you as an expert. And one effective way to do this is to create expert images, which communicate who you are and what you stand for in less than 3 seconds!

So your mission (should you choose to accept!) is to take a fresh look at your Facebook cover profile…

For best result, I need you to be really honest with me here:

• Does your cover show your personality?

• Does it position you as the go to expert in your niche?

• Does it instantly explain what you stand for?

As an example, my cover profile ticks all the above. And if you’re not 100% certain that yours does the same, you need to head straight over to Step 2…

2.     Express your Brand with your Facebook profile

OK, so I’ve shared my expert Facebook cover to give you an idea of what your profile should look like. And if you’re sat behind a crappy image, it’s time to take some fast action and do something about it.

Like NOW!

This is where the power of design comes in. Yup, I’m talking imagery, fonts and colours – they’re all super important here.

Not surprisingly, your starting point to creating your expert brand on Facebook is to give your cover picture some love. After all, this is your first (and maybe only) chance to make the right impression. Facebook is a fickle place, so if you want someone to like and engage with you, you need to ensure your cover picture is saying all the right stuff.

And if your cover fails to scream “expert”, well, you’re in trouble!

So what does your Facebook profile say about you?

To help, let’s unpick a cover I created for one of my own expert brands using a Get It template. I’ll explain all the aspects in play so you can see some expert brand building secrets in action:

  • Express your personality: As an expert, you need to showcase your personality (don’t skimp on this. Lifeless brands are hard to engage with). Always remember that clients want to work with experts they know, like, and trust and your personality is one way to build this credibility. So don’t hide behind your logo. Instead, include a picture of you in your cover so people can see what you look like. But don’t choose any old photo. Remember, you want people to conclude that you are an expert. It took a while to pick the picture on my Get It header, but I liked my expression and the mike subtly conveys authority – all good things when you’re building an expert brand. But the personality aspects don’t stop there. The campervan background doesn’t just look nice – it serves a purpose by conveying my sense of fun and adventure – two super important aspects for my brand.

  • Choose colours that evoke your desired emotional response: When building a brand, I put A LOT of thought into colour choice. Here’s why… colour evokes emotional reactions at a subconscious level. So I purposely choose colours that encourage a client to think about my brand in a certain way. It’s the same for font choice.

  • Use fonts that shout authority: Again, the font style is no accident. The clear bold font alongside the hand written font evokes the right reaction.

  • Build your list: Finally, the call to action button on my Facebook cover starts to build my list. By inviting people to opt-in to something via Facebook, I can encourage them to join my email list so I can build a relationship in their inbox. And engagement (as you know) is a sign of authority too.

How does your current profile cover image stand up here? If it lacks any of these elements, don’t worry. A lot of people miss the importance of design when it comes to creating their expert profile on Facebook. But this is good news for you because that’s where you get to stand out.

And if you’ve got your hands on our Ultimate Facebook Cover Kit (for experts), then you’ve got no excuse. That’s because, with the easy to customize templates contained in the kit, you can have yourself an expert profile cover online in three simple steps.

3.     Share your brand with social share images

You know it’s true (and you’re guilty of it too)! You only read the headline of an article and then skim or skip over the rest!

We’ve all been there. You skim content before you commit to reading it. And only if the headline grabs your attention in those first few seconds do you hang around to find out more.

So how do you get more people engaging with your expert content?

Well, this is where social share images come into their own.

Here’s why…

A short, snappy headline, inspiring quote, or a high-value snippet of content (paired with a visually stunning, attention grabbing, professionally-designed-to-your-expert-personal-brand), wins the war on skimmers!

Social shares are designed for the skimmers. This cracking Facebook tool grabs those eyes and draws them into your page, into your content, and into your expert world. Pretty cool, huh?

And what’s even better is when you get them right (that’s when you use your expert know-how combined with your personal brand); they get shared!

And that’s brand building gold on Facebook! Because you get to spread your reach and grow your Tribe with the help of people who already love what you do.

So, once you’ve got your fonts, colours, and appropriate images, it’s time to plan your content. It’s super important to think strategically here. Don’t post any old thing – always think about the impression or message a particular post will have on your Tribe.

Aim to share your personality, express your expertise, AND showcase your core brand values.

And don’t think everything you post has to be original. Whilst you should post your own stuff, you also need to be a curator and share a careful selection of relevant content, which others have produced.

I’ve found that when it comes to content, there’s no right and wrong. Just be true to your brand and share what feels right for you. This last year I’ve experimented with lots of different posts. For example, I’ve had lots of success posting photos (which I’ve taken on my iPhone) with a text overlay. As well as letting my Tribe into appropriate aspects of my life, these demonstrate my design skills.

Then, in my Expert Brand Secrets Facebook group, I’ve shared longer text-based posts. Again, these are appropriate for my audience and allow me to share my design and branding expertise.

What can you create today, which shares your brand message and positions you as the expert? Check out some examples below of images, which have worked well for me.
