“I’m bringing home the bacon, love”
Do you have an unusual “must-do” on your to-do list?
For a long time, mine has been to learn butchery skills from a master butcher.
Yes, I know this may sound a little odd, but as a meat eater, I feel a responsibility to know how to use and prepare meat properly. Call it my “cavewomen instincts”, but I’ve always liked the idea of being able to buy a whole pig (for example), and know how to carve it up to make the most of every part.
Yep, meat preparation is a skill I greatly respect and something I’ve always longed to be able to do.
So when I spotted an opportunity to get cosy with master butcher, Henry Herbert from Hobbs House Bakery, I was sold. After all, who wouldn’t be with a promise like this?
“Meat mayhem in 4 hours, you will bone, tie, mince, stuff sausages, chop, sharpen, cook, eat and drink”
So, this Saturday, my sister-in-law, Frankie and I headed off to Chipping Sodbury to get busy slicing, dicing and preparing some yummy food. We even got to fill own sausages using one of those cool machines (that’s another tick off the list).
Here’s the proof!
These little beauties were lovingly stuffed with our very own homemade sausage mix and they were totally DEELICIOUS.
Now whilst I was pretty skilled with the carving knife, I did conclude my butchery skills would most definitely remain a part-time hobby. You see, after that amazing meat masterclass, I now know FOR CERTAIN that I am better off sticking with design!
And that little (unsurprising) insight got me thinking about the value of certainty in your business.
Let me explain…
What are you waiting to test?
As a business owner, I’m sure you’ve got a ton of ideas in your head. Some of those will be game-changers for you. But others are best left on the shelf – I mean seriously, me as a master butcher!
But how can you be sure which is which?
Sure, you may have an instinct about which ones are winners – but you can NEVER be 100% certain until you’ve tested something with your market and you have the hard cold facts to reflect on.
Look, it’s dangerous to make assumptions. And if you invest a heap of time, love and money into an idea that’s just never ever ever going to work, your business will suffer (and so will you).
So what’s the solution?
Actually, it’s pretty darn simple.
You just test it.
And with the internet and social media sites, it’s easier than ever to find out quickly and easily if your big idea is a winner or a binner.
What’s gonna bring home YOUR bacon?
Sticking with the meat theme here, how can you make best use of the internet to discover if an idea is worth pursuing? It really is simple. Rustle up some marketing – maybe a Facebook ad, a website banner, a digital flyer, a social share image, a promotional postcard, an eBook etc…
Then just get it out there and sit back to see what feedback and momentum you get.
There are a few ways you can use this:
Create a couple Facebook adverts with different images to see which converts best
Test different headlines on your eBook cover to see which gets the most downloads
Create a “sneak peak” digital flyer to assess interest in a new product or service BEFORE you perfect the polished version
Create some promotional postcards to assess an offer
You get the picture…
And your business will benefits as a result. That’s because the feedback and insights you’ll get from doing this sort of stuff is golddust.
And just like I know I’m not cut out to be a master butcher, you’ll know where to invest your attention and bring home the bacon.
How can you test your market?
Now you might be thinking, “well that’s easy to for you to say Dee, you’re a designer, I’m not.”
And yes of course you’d be right… But you’re also not alone.
I know a lot of business owners who get frustrated because they don’t have the skills or tools they need to test their ideas quickly and easily. Sure you could hire a designer to help you, but let’s be honest. Your mind is probably running at 10,000 mph and you just don’t have the time to wait for a designer to get back to you. And anyway, the fees they charge for an idea you just want to test is often out of your budget.
AGGGHHHHHH… (I feel your pain).
Now, if that sounds like you, I’ve got some good news.
You see, after seeing this problem crop up so often, I quickly figured there was a HUGE demand for a professional toolkit to help non-designers create their own visually-stunning, professional-looking marketing whenever they needed it.
So I got to work and Get It ByDeesign was born. …YAY!
